"Came in after cutting my thumb accidentally with severe bleeding"

About: Cowes Phillip Island Health Hub / Urgent Care Centre

(as the patient),

I came in and completed the full registration process. I was experiencing severe pain and continuous bleeding from accidentally cutting my thumb while trying to make dinner, which was the entire reason for my visit, and waited in the waiting area. After 20 minutes, I was triaged and told to return to the waiting room.

I then waited for over three hours while other patients who arrived after me were triaged, seen, and discharged. Eventually, I was the only person left in the waiting room. I attempted to speak to the nurses but I believe I was ignored, and no staff were to be seen. When I tried again, the nurses walked away and seemingly continued to ignore me.

By this stage, the bleeding had stopped, but the pain was so severe that I could not feel my thumb, let alone move it. I sat in the waiting room crying while hearing laughter coming from the back. I felt ignored, unimportant, and dismissed.

After almost four hours of waiting, I was finally called in by the doctor. It was only at this point it seemed to me that the nurses decided to check in and show concern after having seemingly ignored me for hours. I chose not to engage, as this did not feel like genuine care. Care should involve regular communication and updates, not attention only once a doctor becomes involved.

The doctor informed me that my wait time and level of care were dependent on triage decisions and the assigned care category. Given that I had repeatedly been ignored, I did not see the point in speaking to the nursing staff at that stage.

By the time I was seen, it was almost midnight. I then had to drive myself home and still somehow manage to get myself to work afterward.
