"Neurology and spinal department"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Goderich Street Outpatients Clinic

(as the patient),

Had an appointment to see spinal surgeon at rph hostpital wa.. They never even came out of their office to have face to face appointment with me. Their registrar referred me to neurologist at level A rph and I had my appointment today only to be told they can't treat me as they don't know what's causing my problem.

To my understanding neurologists deal with spinal brain muscles and nerve problems. I have degenerative disc disease and problems rising from a seated position. The assessment with neurologist today was the same assessment I had with the registrar who referred me from spinal department.

Neurologist told me they can't treat me as they think it could maybe fibromyalgia! Well isn't that a nerve disorder? and their speciality!

I'm passed off again with no explanation as to what's causing my problem. I was made to feel like im not being believed and it's all in my head.

No confidence in Being treated at RPH anymore.

Came home to a feeling of not being heard because I don't fit the neurologist criteria for all what they look for in their neurological assessments. When are they going to learn that people with pain on a daily basis are not putting it on. ..They need to be heard! ..Not dismissed because, in my opinion, neurologist can't expand their minds to listen more and not just stick to a box of set symptoms for making their diagnosis.

Very disappointed 😞

Dear geminiws35,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and I am genuinely sorry to hear how distressed and unheard you felt during your recent appointments at Royal Perth Hospital. It must be very frustrating to continue seeking answers for ongoing pain and difficulties with mobility, only to feel that you are being moved between services without clear information.

As we do not have your personal details, it is hard for us to investigate your case in detail, however our Neurology team has provided some context about the clinical decisions made. Once you were seen by the neurology team, your description is that they concluded the most likely diagnosis of your condition is fibromyalgia. In most cases, the neurology service is not best placed to manage people with fibromyalgia, as is reflected in the state-wide Neurology (Adult) Referral Access Criteria. Fibromyalgia is a condition that presents with complex symptoms, and people living with this condition are usually best supported through pain management and multidisciplinary care.

I imagine that this potential diagnosis may have come as a surprise to you and raised more questions for you. I hope that the neurology service referred you on to another more appropriate specialty or back to your General Practitioner for follow up and ongoing care.

Regardless of clinical criteria, we never want anyone to leave an appointment feeling confused, dismissed, or unsupported. It is very important to us that patients feel listened to and respected, and I am sorry this was not your experience. If you would like to discuss your situation further, I encourage you to contact our Patient Experience team on (08) 9224 1637 or via email: rpbg.feedback@health.wa.gov.au and they will be able to assist you.

I wish you all the best.

Kind Regards,

Ben Noteboom
