"Terrifying experience"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Adult Mental Health Ward 2K

(as the patient),

On the ward I’m on, a patient was threatening nursing staff who were trying to assist another patient before they were due to leave. The nurses were polite and just trying to help this patient.

The other patient started swearing and calling the nurses horrible names and then started making threats to hurt one particular nurse. When the nurses tried to get the patient to stop they made very violent threats.

The nurse left for the day but I’m worried for my safety, and the safety of the staff there. This patient keeps telling us patients that they hurt people for fun and light fires.

Dear Scared/worried,

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns. I am very sorry to hear that you witnessed this distressing situation on Ward 2K. Your safety, and the safety of all patients, visitors, and staff is extremely important to us.

I appreciate you acknowledging the professionalism of the nursing staff involved. Our team works hard to provide safe and respectful care, even in challenging circumstances.

Reports of threatening or violent behaviour are taken very seriously and the concerns you have raised will be followed up promptly with the relevant senior staff. While another patient’s situation is unable to be discussed, please be assured that steps are taken to assess and manage any risks to ensure the wellbeing of everyone on the ward.

If you continue to feel unsafe or unsettled at any point, please let a staff member know immediately so they can provide support. You are also welcome to ask to speak with the Nurse Unit Manager or Ward Co-ordinator if you would like to discuss this further.

Thank you again for raising this with us. Your feedback is important and helps maintain a safe and supportive environment for all patients.

Kind Regards,

Sandra Miller
Executive Director
