"Stuck in ED for 4 nights"

About: Peel Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

Stuck in ED for 4 nights, no beds on wards , immune compromised  patient in amongst gastro etc . Not offered any snacks like on ward , minimal drinks though out the day, no tea or coffee trolley , missed my parent's dinner and the 4 patients next to them.

Having to wait to point of having accidents for toilet help . No showers help , not answering calls for help , I can hear people calling out help help help etc cause I believe nurses so busy and short staffed it takes half a hour to get them to answer the bell if they answer at all , or they say I’ll be back in 5 minutes turn light off and don’t return till next round of check.

Getting told off for helping my own parent go to the toilet. Getting told off for asking for a commode instead.

Nearly accidentally giving double dose of meds luckily my parent the patient noticed .

Dear tigerhx83

Thank you for taking the time to share what you and your parent experienced. I am genuinely sorry that your parent was left in the Emergency Department for four nights without access to the care, support and dignity that every patient deserves. The situation you have described is far from the standard we aim to provide.

It is deeply concerning to hear that an immune compromised patient was placed near others with gastro illness, that basic food and drink needs were not met, and that your parent missed meals along with several other patients. No patient should ever go without essential care, and I am sincerely sorry this occurred.

The delays in responding to call bells, the long waits for toileting support to the point of accidents, the lack of shower assistance, and patients calling out for help without timely response reflect pressures that we must address urgently. You should never have been discouraged from helping your own parent when staff were unavailable, and the refusal of a commode in that situation was not appropriate.

I am also very concerned about the near medication error. Medication safety is one of our highest priorities, and this incident will be reviewed immediately.

To allow us to look specifically into your parent’s care so that we can address your concerns more comprehensively, please contact us on 9531 8177 or email PHC.feedback@health.wa.gov.au. Your feedback is important and will help us improve the care we provide.

Kind regards
