"Poor bedside manner by doctor"

About: Sale Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I went to ED after speaking to Nurse on Call who advised to attend.

I was seen by triage Nurse who was lovely and then a trainee doctor.

I was then called into the triage section and greeted by a doctor who I feel clearly has no appropriate bedside manner. They leant against the bed and as I stood there asked me why I am there. I explained many symptoms which (blood clot or DVT) was a possible cause. They stood there and said let me see your legs (with their arms crossed and I felt showing a face that was like I was wasting their time)

I sat down they looked from where they were, no attempt to feel or look closer and said well your bloods are normal and as no history in family you are fine and they walked away! I looked and asked triage nurse okay so I guess I can go?

I left feeling embarrassed and like an idiot thanks to your Doctor!! I have unexplained pain and swelling in my leg and they offered no assistance in an ultra sound or any follow up! Feeling really let down and in my opinion your doctor should be trained better!!

Dear hadarrs33

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience following your recent visit to the Emergency Department. I am sorry to hear that you left feeling embarrassed, unsupported, and concerned about the care you received. This is not the experience we want for anyone seeking help, particularly when you were worried about your health and acting on clinical advice to attend.

We appreciate you acknowledging the positive interaction you had with our triage nurse. However, I am genuinely sorry to read about your consultation with the treating doctor and the way this interaction made you feel. All patients should feel listened to, respected, and confident that their concerns have been appropriately assessed. Your feedback regarding communication, bedside manner, and the clarity of your assessment has been noted and will be reviewed with the relevant clinical leadership team.

While I am unable to comment on individual clinical decisions via email, please be assured that your concerns will be carefully reviewed as part of our ongoing commitment to improving patient experience and care delivery. If you continue to experience symptoms such as pain or swelling, we strongly encourage you to seek further medical review through your GP or by returning for urgent assessment if symptoms worsen.

If you would like your concerns to be formally reviewed or wish to provide any additional information, please feel to contact me directly at divyanshu.dua@cghs.com.au or on 03 5413 8700.

Kind regards

Divyanshu Dua
