"Care plan and transport for terminally ill patient"

About: Kununurra Hospital / General Ward

(as a friend),

I am a friend of a couple who were long time residents going back 35 years.

On of them passed away late 2025 and their spouse was recently diagnosed with cancer in their pancreas, liver, spots on their lungs and blood clots in their left leg. They were admitted to KDH last month suffering serve pain. My friend fell out of bed one morning and upon my arrival I was gladly there to witness the young doctor say to my friend they're ok now you can go home.

I said no my friend wasn't going home to an empty house in their condition. The conversation continued and I said they needed to be flown out by RFDS, doctor said my friend doesn't qualify because they can walk.

An elderly terminally ill patient, doesn't qualify for RFDS, I suggested PATS to organise a flight for a Monday afternoon, this was on a Friday.. Doctor said it would take longer and that my friend should buy their  own ticket.

I booked my friend the flight on the Monday. I cant believe how KDH can treat a terminally  patient like this. Many locals travelled on the flight along with my spouse, they all new my friend's treatment at the hospital and looked after them during the flight.

A wheelchair was given from the car to the plane, then eventually to the front doors of Virgin T2. Myself and many others are really angry about my friend's treatment. They are now in a private hospital organised by their daughter in Perth. I feel the medical staff did not do their job in this case

Dear AngryFriend,

Thank you for contacting us and for sharing what your friend has been through. We are very sorry to hear about their recent health challenges and the difficult circumstances surrounding their admission to Kununurra District Hospital.

The concerns you described regarding their pain, their fall, the discussion about discharge, and the advice provided about medical transport are serious. No patient—especially someone who is elderly, unwell, and facing a terminal diagnosis—should feel unsupported or unsafe in our care. I understand how distressing this experience must have been for both you and your friend.

Your feedback is important, and it will help us strengthen how we support patients with complex or end‑of‑life needs.

Thank you again for advocating for your friend. We are pleased to hear they are now receiving care in Perth with family support, and I wish them comfort during this time.

Kind Regards

Lynda Cobb-Martin,
