I stayed 3 nights at Mount Hospital Perth after a neurosurgical procedure
The doctors and nurses were beyond fantastic - however they could help, they would go above and beyond
However, it is very clear to me that the Executive are seemingly more concerned about budgets, rather than patient and staff experiences
I experienced failure after failure, not due to the staff, but due to the poor internal systems in place
For a private hospital - the level of service was ridiculous
I checked in for my surgery - shared room, no problem, pre-op, things change
I'm a younger female - whilst I'm dressed, waiting to go to surgery, a mature aged male is brought in to share the room?
I have no issue sharing, but obviously not with someone of the opposite gender + large age gap, particularly when post-op there will be sensitive topics discussed
I am concerned about appearing as difficult, however, the intake nurse begins completing her paperwork, it is not until the nurse finishes, that we hear them go to speak to the ward clerk about the very obvious issue
Apparently the other patient was supposed to be in the next room - not only has the other patient had to share personal information where we can hear, they are then made to feel uncomfortable when they relocate them
**Issue 1
Whilst waiting to head to surgery, asked by housekeeping team to complete dinner menu request - told my dinner should be available on ward or alternative if later than 7pm return
**Issue 2
Day continues, I'm eventually taken for surgery - there are delays, no issues for me, completely understand
Wake in recovery, all things go well, taken back to the ward
Arrive on ward well past dinner time - once settled, ask if there is anything I could have for dinner [fasting for nearly 24 hours]
Nursing staff unsure, will check - very much appreciated
Then told by nursing staff - only food on ward is 1x egg lettuce sandwich
No juice, no yogurt, no fruit, no bread for toast nothing else!
Explain I don't eat egg, is there any chance of anything else, cheese/crackers, bread for toast, anything?
Nursing staff say they will try to find out - appreciated
Eventually given ham/cheese sandwich
OK, but very unsatisfying and disappointing - is this not a private hospital?
Next day after breakfast [cold stale bread, no option for toast, defrosted 'hot' option of ham/cheese croissant] - I was moved from a shared to private room - lovely, or so I thought..
However, not all parties were informed so as I was taken for medical imaging, missed lunch, there were no suitable options again and given leftovers of 'Singapore Noodles' which was noodles, no veg, no protein and a handful of spinach leaves thrown on top as an after thought
Then, 1.5hrs later I was brought a "sandwich [white bread, ham, cheese, 2x lettuce leaves]" not sure how that happened?
Dinner - fine
Ran out of water jugs, because no overnight orderly for the entire hospital and nurses were then required to do their job + housekeeping = disgusting, in my opinion
Day 3
Breakfast - revolting. Again, cold defrosted bread - apparently Mount Hospital don't offer toast and instead want patients to eat cold/stale excuse for 'bread'
Lunch - 'spaghetti bolognese' was actually fettucini, tomato sauce, cooked frozen peas and ?grilled chicken breast cut into chunks??? Weirdest I have ever seen
Dinner - curried sausages, fine, thick gelatinous sauce which was quite sickly, but looking forward to veg. Broccoli fine, pumpkin raw/cold inside, rice saltier than the sea. Yuck.
Again, no water jugs on ward, no overnight orderly
Day 4
Thankfully discharged - despite being in pain and beyond uncomfortable, happy to be off the ward and free
Thoughts -
Ward pantry never filled, no options for patients, I was lucky in having a partner bring me snacks/drinks etc
Very different to the other patients on the ward, many who are older, with no support people available to be on the ward daily
Not only is this a private hospital, where there should be a reasonable high expectation for care, the team members were very vocal about their frustrations in not being able to care for their patients to the best of their abilities
Based on my experience, revolting, revolting, revolting
"Amazing staff, massively under-resourced"
