"My parent had emergency referral letter for ED, no beds available for over 8 hours"

About: Peel Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

Many nurses and doctors saw and talked about the severity of my my parent's injury and how critical and important it was we got treatment quickly. We didn't get a bed and was sat in the waiting room for over 8 hours. My parent's bloods were done in the corridor of the emergency department because they had no beds. We waited for hours and hours with nobody seeing us and any time we did they talked about the severity and time sensitive nature of treatment but they could not provide it with no beds.

My my parent had an infected wound with health professionals all worried the infection could be spreading to the bone.

Dear delphinusqry34,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I am very sorry to hear about what you and your parent went through. I understand how distressing it must have been to be told repeatedly about the severity and time sensitive nature of the infection while also waiting for many hours without access to a treatment space. This is not the experience we want anyone in our care to have.

Waiting in the Emergency Department for such a long period of time, especially while concerned about a serious infection that may have been spreading, would have been incredibly stressful. Having blood tests completed in the corridor and remaining in the waiting room for over eight hours without a bed is not the care we aim to provide, and I sincerely apologise for the worry this caused.

While our Emergency Department works to see patients as quickly as possible, long delays and a lack of treatment spaces can occur at times of significant demand. However, this does not lessen the impact the situation had on you and your parent, and we did not meet the standard of care you should expect.

Please know that your feedback is important and will be shared with the relevant teams so we can review what happened and consider where improvements can be made. To allow us to look specifically into your parent’s care so that we can address your concerns more comprehensively, please contact us on 9531 8177 or email PHC.feedback@health.wa.gov.au. Your feedback is important and will help us improve the care we provide.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. Your experience matters, and we are committed to learning from it.

Kind regards

Kellie Blyth
