I presented through ED for a perianal abscess/fistula.
ED staff were great, decided on surgery. Was sent upstairs and about to go through when surgery was cancelled for an emergency. I had no issues with this, and was informed to re-present to surgical admissions at 11am the next day.
I did so and was already in a large amount of pain. I was unable to sit down to the abscess location and standing caused intense, painful pressure.
My only option was to stand. After 30 minutes the pain caused me to start crying and I had to lean over a bench to take my weight and let my legs go limp.
The receptionist could see me from their desk but the sign saying I must be waiting an hour before asking about wait times left me unwilling to approach. The staff member at the counter did not acknowledge me or notify anyone of my distress. In fact, the only person to ask if I was okay was another patient's mother.
The surgery was performed that afternoon and I was discharged.
The next morning I realised there was swabs protruding from a hole near my anus. I was not made aware of any internal packing. I checked my discharge paperwork and found no acknowledgement or information.
I called the hospital and was told to present to ED.
ED doctor was lovely, but said they had checked the surgical notes and there was no internal packing and believed what I was seeing was just a swap put on top after surgery. I informed the doctor I could feel them and it wasnt until they looked that they agreed I was internally packed.
I asked if they needed to be removed and what wouldve happened if I hadnt noticed.
The doctor admitted they didnt know what the product was or what to do, so they left to call theatre, then came back to say they will dissolve.
Recently, I recieved a msg to say I should've gone home with a script for metronidazole and a script for this.
I already had and filled the script. It concerns me the team couldn't find information to say I already had that.
I cannot fault the ED staff, they were brilliant, but I have been left with no faith in the surgical team at AHC.
"Sub-par care"
