About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital

(as the patient),

I went to the eye hospital at 4 am so I could still go to work.

My left eye had swollen shut.

The nurse told me there were no eye doctors at the eye hospital. They knockoff at midnight.

How can the only Eye hospital in Australia’s biggest city not have an eye doctor 24/7?

In my opinion, it is unbelievable and the nurse said it has been like this for 10 years.

Dear peppermj38,

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent early morning visit to the Emergency Department. We are sorry to hear about the discomfort and concern you experienced.

While our hospital specialises in ophthalmology services, on-site ophthalmologists are rostered until midnight. After-hours care is provided through established emergency and on-call arrangements to ensure patients are appropriately assessed and escalated where clinically required.

Your feedback has been shared with hospital leadership as part of ongoing service review. If you feel comfortable, we would like to discuss the matter with you further, please contact us on SESLHD-SSEHConsumerFeedback@health.nsw.gov.au.

Regards,

Dr Pauline Rumma
Director of Clinical Services
