"Care received and attitude towards patients"

About: Denmark Health Service

(as a relative),

My spouse was admitted to Denmark hospital from Albany Regional to recuperate from spinal cord mastastic growths which left them paralyzed and home adjustments were needed to accommodate their new disabilities.

Upon arrival we were met by nurses and a physio who repeatedly asked what was my spouse doing here and why was they were in Denmark Hospital. It was presented like my spouse was a huge inconvenience to the comfy lifestyle choices of certain staff. I felt it was definitely not patient based care, more like reluctant chore.

Whilst staying in the care of Denmark Hospital my spouse received  some physio, but was told that it was pointless as my spouse would never walk again. This felt again like lack of effort and neglectful care  because it was extra work and my spouse was somehow unworthy and in the way.

My spouse also had a UTI   that was apparently treated. They also had a bleed or eye stroke a week before their discharge which was never followed up. My spouse was bundled out of Hospital at a seemingly lightning speed,  they were left in the corridor in their wheel chair and patch over their weeping eye, waiting for the ambulance service to take them home on a 39 ° day whilst friends hurried to pack their belongings. We were given a script with four medications and no instructions about aftercare.  I believe the Doctor had also sacked the aged care provider the week beforehand.

When my spouse got home I called the Hospital and the Dr to ask about medications,  and who I  should report to etc. I was told they were only returning my call as a courtesy and I should read the discharge papers. What discharge papers I asked?

It took 3 days to finally track down the papers that were not given on discharge. When my spouse got home they had the most terrible chesty phlegmy cough and their eye was persistently weeping. After eventually receiving and reading  the discharge papers we were  very shocked to find out that my spouse had had sepsis while in Denmark  Hospital (apparently it had been treated)

No information was given about catheter care, eye care, sepsis etc. also we had no care provider now and we heading into the Christmas period with no idea what the hell was going on. My spouse's  eye and face began to swell and the weeping and discharge was pretty horrendous. We got anti biotic drops from the chemist and bathed the eye every half hour for days and days. Eventually my spouse ended up in Emergency  Albany. The Emergency team  did tests and  then wanted to fly my spouse to Perth to remove their eye as the infection was so bad that their life was at risk and concerns that the infection had gone to the brain. The infection was contained ,the eye had just died..then whilst still in Emergency my spouse started getting big blotches on the other side of their face, head and good eye. This was the shingles. My spouse is still in Hospital 4 weeks later one eye, stage 4 cancer, terrible infection and shingles. They have had to endure so much.

I felt Denmark was very neglectful in my spouse's care and have put their life at extra risk...just not that bothered,... too hard.  The facility's attitude towards health and wellbeing is very lax and substandard in my opinion.

Hopefully my spouse survives this unfortunate neglectful disregard for their wellbeing.

Feeling disregarded and worthless.

Dear All lifes matter, or do they?

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns regarding the care your spouse received during their recent stay at Denmark Hospital. I want to acknowledge how distressing this experience has been for both you and your spouse, especially at a time when your spouse was facing significant health challenges. Please know we are genuinely sorry for the distress, worry, and loss of confidence that the events you described have caused.

We take all concerns about patient care and staff behaviour extremely seriously, and your complaint has highlighted issues that fall below the standards of care, communication, and compassion that we expect of our service. I am deeply sorry that your experience did not reflect our commitment to providing safe, high-quality and compassionate care to every patient and their families.

We recognise that your experience provides an important opportunity for us to learn and improve, and we would like to investigate this further. To help us do so, I would be grateful if you could contact me directly. My name is Karen Anstey, Director of Nursing/Health Service Manager for Denmark Hospital, I would welcome your call on 0428 481 201. This will help us to begin the review process so we can better understand and address your experience.

Thank you again for sharing your feedback. I hope your spouse is now receiving the medical care that they require.

Yours sincerely
