"I fractured ankle and leg and was treated at Sutherland Hospital"

About: Sutherland Hospital / Jara

(as the patient),

After a humiliating fall and consequent loss of dignity, I was admitted to Sutherland A&E for treatment and the staff in this department were fantastic.

My timeline on events in the first 24 hours was clouded by trauma and pain relief treatments but everyone treated me with respect and dignity and despite an awful fracture, involving ligament and tendon damage, I was not in any pain.

After the initial stabilisation of the dislocation, I was taken to Jara ward and was given the most incredible care, 24 hours around the clock, by both the qualified and nurses in training, who showed compassion and respect. Everyone always introduced themselves and used my name when talking me.

Dr Y and Dr SP both reassured me of the painful truth of my injury, but I made it to my surgical repair the following day and the healing process began.

The ward doctors, administration staff, pharmacists, physio and catering staff were all lovely, kind and supported me during my recovery. The imaging teams were considerate to lack of mobility and were compassionate during these scans.

As a nurse, being thrown over to the other side, of being a patient, I can only give praise and compliments the staff for their care. There certainly appeared to be an ethos of compassion and for that, I am truly grateful.

Dear Auzzie_patient_from_Greece,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience following what must have been a very distressing injury. I’m truly sorry to hear about your fall and the trauma you experienced, but I am grateful you felt supported, respected and cared for during such a challenging time.

Your kind words about the teams in Sutherland Hospital’s Emergency Department, Jara Ward, Imaging, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Catering and Administration are deeply appreciated. Our staff work hard to ensure every person is treated with dignity and compassion, and it is wonderful to hear that this was reflected in each interaction you had — from introductions, to communication, to the clinical care provided.

We will make sure your feedback is shared with all the teams and all involved in your care. They will be very pleased to hear that you felt reassured, well‑informed, and comfortable despite the severity of your injury.

As a nurse yourself, your perspective carries special weight. It is incredibly meaningful for our teams to know that you felt safe, supported and confident in the care you received when you found yourself on the other side of the healthcare experience.

Thank you again for your thoughtful and generous feedback. We wish you all the very best in your recovery and rehabilitation journey.

Yours sincerley

Vicki Weeden
