I believe my doctor cancelled my surgery because I sought a second opinion.
In January I saw a plastic surgeon (referred by my GP after a positive biopsy) regarding a skin cancer on my forehead. The plastic surgeons plan was a wide margin excision and flap repair of the site under general anesthesia, surgery booked for 4 weeks later.
I was concerned about the extent of the surgery and potential for scarring (on my face), so I sought a second opinion from a Dermatologist.
So that I could make an informed decision between the two surgical options. I phoned the plastic surgeon again, I spoke to their nurse, explaining I was having some anxiety about the surgery, I didn't state that I got a second opinion only that I'd seen a dermatologist about my other scars and I was requesting further information about the procedure. The nurse stated they would pass on the message and Plastic Surgeon would get back to me. That afternoon the nurse phoned me back to say Surgeon had cancelled the surgery, as Surgeon wanted me to have full confidence in what they are able to do, and because I got a second opinion that seemingly shows a lack of trust.
I was shocked the Plastic Surgeon cancelled the surgery, as I was only seeking reassurance and clarification about the procedure.
I wasn't expecting the plastic surgeon to get so offended!
A patient has a right to seek a second opinion and informed consent without fear of repercussion from the first doctor. I feel my informed choice was taken away.
I have since had the skin cancer removed surgically by the dermatologist.
