"Maternity Aftercare"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Maternity Ward

(as the patient),

We we're told our baby had Jaundice two days after they were born. We had never been through the process and so were very uncertain.

Different staff members from different departments including paedeatricians, paedeatric nurses and midwives as well as trainee midwives arrived at the beginning and throughout their shifts with either little, a lack of or misinformation.

There was a consistent lack or mix up of information communicated with the change in shifts within the maternity ward. While in the ward on our fourth night, myself and baby were moved and left in a private room. We we're told there were not enough blankets or disposable bottles for use while at the hospitable and to bring our own.

Twice the incubator machine had a high temp alarm and different midwives were continuously adjusting the temperature set. One midwife even entered the room and turned off the incubator for at least half an hour, for the first time during our stay and with no explanation.

We were left for hours each day with no communication and minimal care for myself and baby. Two midwives extremely dismissive whenever we asked for help and were disruptive coming in every hour to prick and take blood samples from baby with attitudes that I feel were entitled and lacked compassion.

Another midwife in charge started yelling at me that I needed to remain in the hospital for the night after the paedeatrician had released us to go home. The delivery side was absolutely phenomenal and I could not fault their care. However, the aftercare on the ward I found was atrocious and I wish it upon no mother.

Dear melonft95,

Thank you for taking the time to share feedback about your recent experience in our Maternity Ward. I am pleased to hear that your delivery and the care you received during that time met your expectations.

I am sorry that aspects of your postnatal care, including communication regarding your baby’s care, did not meet the standard we aim to provide. Timely information is essential for families, and your experience is important for us to understand.

Our Director of Nursing and Miwifery would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you to better explore your concerns in more detail, and identify where our communication and care processes may be improved, as we genuinely want to do better.

If you are willing, please contact our Safety and Quality team via GSEGCG@health.wa.gov.au at your convenience so we can discuss this further.

Kind Regards

Hamish Burton
