"Heart disease and old age"

About: St George Hospital / SGH Supportive Care Service

(as the patient),

Low blood pressure and possibly a small heart attack contributed to my first fall at the age of 98 years, in 2025. I had some minor rib fractures, massive bruising and lots of bleeding from knocking my head and neck against a small bookshelf which slightly broke the fall. The fall really affected my confidence, but with the support of my family and the all the medical professionals I’m back at home, after a 7 week stint in St George hospital. There were many days I felt like throwing in the towel, but I kept going forward one step at a time; tiny ones. Staying focused and keeping a positive attitude really helped. Even small things like eating a good portion of my breakfast, lunch and dinner. And I am grateful for all the love and help I got during this tough time.

After 16 days in a hospital bed, with minimal movement,

I never thought I would be able to use my walker again. Once they got me sitting on a chair, there were a few weeks of Physiotherapy.

St George Supportive Care Services/ Clinic have been incredible following up with me once I got home from hospital. They are hands on and check in on me all the time; even following up with my Aged care service provider.  They’ve helped me stay out of hospital and managed the care needs required to support me, at home, after my second fall. They’ve been wonderful and are becoming an integral part to my health management at home.

Dear rhinodh98,

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughtful feedback. We are sorry to hear about your fall and the injuries you sustained; however, it is reassuring to know that, despite the challenges, you were able to return home and use your walker again. Providing patient-centred care is at the forefront of what we aim to provide to all our patients, and knowing you were able to remain positive and focused reflects your hard work and determination.

We are so pleased to hear that our Supportive Care Service (SCS) team provided you with ongoing support and care while you continued to recover at home and after your second fall. Your kind words will be shared with senior management and the SCS team, and I am certain they will be grateful to hear of your appreciation. We wish you strength as you continue to recover and thank you again for sharing your experience.

Warm regards,

Lauren Sturgess

Acting General Manager
