After undergoing open heart surgery for AVR, I joined the cardiac rehab program run at PoW Hospital. My surgery was planned and so was not a sudden emergency. I was fortunate in that I recovered quite quickly after the surgery and so was able to join the cardiac rehab team about 2 or 3 weeks post-surgery.
My experience with the cardiac rehab team was fantastic. All members of the team were entirely professional, kind, caring and welcoming. My initial assessment was thorough, and I was allocated a time slot soon after that assessment.
The exercise regime was run very well and was a good way to build up confidence. I particularly enjoyed the challenge of the HIIT program. The team was always encouraging and, even although there were people with different levels of fitness, I never observed anyone being discriminated against or being ignored. The team is a credit to PoW Hospital and to the nursing and physiotherapy professions.
