"PA Announcement"

About: Geraldton Hospital

(as the patient),

I was recently admitted to the general ward and would like to provide feedback about the executive announcements that are played over the speakers twice a day.

When you are unwell and lying in a hospital bed, you are already feeling vulnerable. You may be in pain, anxious about your health, waiting for results, or simply exhausted. The ward environment can already feel overwhelming.

When these announcements come on, to me, they feel sudden and intrusive. The tone is formal and amplified, and it breaks the quiet of the ward. For someone who is sick, I believe this can increase anxiety and make it harder to rest.

Personally, when I hear the announcement, I feel like I need to sit up or pay attention, even though the message does not relate to my care. It interrupts conversations with nurses and doctors and can make it harder to focus on what they are saying.

At times, the announcements feel more like organisational messaging than something that supports patient recovery. From my perspective, it can feel performative — as though it is aimed at visibility or branding rather than at the experience of people who are unwell and trying to heal.

Hospitals are already noisy environments, and rest is a critical part of recovery. I think that a calmer, quieter ward would feel more therapeutic and supportive. It may be worth considering whether these announcements could be limited to non-clinical areas or reduced in patient care spaces.

I understand internal communication is important, but from a patient’s point of view, maintaining a quiet and psychologically safe environment should come first.

Dear hawkeg76,

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Care Opinion.

I was sorry to learn that our Daily Discharge announcement has had an impact on your wellbeing during your admission. You are correct that the health campus environment should provide a space where patient comfort and wellbeing is always our highest focus.

The intention of this announcement is to engage our patients and their loved ones in their clinical care. This involves encouraging people to understand their proposed clinical course and being involved in their discharge plans so there are no surprises. These messages promote empowerment to make the necessary arrangements to be collected in the morning of discharge, along with information provided about the Hospital in the Home service and the great opportunity for inpatients to continue their treatment in the comfort of their home.

We are constantly reviewing this messaging and will ensure that the messages are not being broadcast during patient rest time. I thank you for providing this feedback.

Regards

Dr Margaret Sturdy
