"Family birth centre (king eddies)"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Community Midwifery Program

(as the patient),

I gave birth at the Family Birth Center as a first-time mum. From the moment I walked in, I felt calm and safe. The space is warm and welcoming, with photos, plants, soft lighting, fairy lights, and salt lamps — it really helped me relax and feel supported.

My midwife, Mimi, was incredible. She explained everything clearly, never rushed me, and made sure I understood that plans can change, including the possibility I might not birth at the Center. This helped me feel informed and empowered.

I also attended the morning teas for pregnant and new mums, which were a great way to connect with other parents and get to know the midwifery team.

In the end, my birth didn’t go to plan and I needed an emergency C-section. Even so, I never felt unsupported. The education, continuity of care, and advocacy I received through the Birth Center made the experience manageable and much less stressful. Even once I transferred to hospital care, having a midwife there advocating for us made a big difference.

How I felt:

Throughout my pregnancy and birth, I felt safe, supported, and respected. The Birth Center’s environment, midwives, and sense of community aren’t just “nice extras” — in my opinion, they are what make this service effective and so valuable to families.

I am deeply grateful to Mimi and the whole team for their care, compassion, and guidance.

Dear andromedawj43,

Congratulations on the birth of your fist baby and thank you for taking the time to share your story.

It was heartwarming to see how welcomed and supported you were during your time at the Family Birth Centre (FBC). It is clear from your story the care and information Mimi provided allowed you to feel comfortable and aware of any challenges that may arise. I was also pleased to see you chose to attend the morning teas the FBC team host. Like you said this is a great way to connect with other parents and we are very proud to keep supporting this initiative.

I was sorry to hear that your birth didn’t go to plan however pleased to hear that you still felt so supported throughout your time in hospital.

We are extremely proud of the care and compassion demonstrated by our staff. Our teams are always delighted to receive such warm recognition, and we’ll be sure to let Mimi and the rest of the FBC team know how much their care meant to you.

Kind regards,

Melinda
