"Care during birth"

About: Joondalup Health Campus / Maternity

(as the patient),

Went in on a weekday afternoon for labour, first child.  Initially all good got a room and ended up with inducing, very painful but okay. Next day 10am got moved to suite, asked for an epidural service reasonable good. Then downhill from there. Complained of Cold to nurses not given blankets, support people made requests nurses said its not cold just epidural. Started shaking, support people informed nurse, we were told it was normal..

Started feeling extreme neck and shoulder pain, once again informed a nurse, nurse said this was all normal. This happened for 6 hours. At some point I stopped knowing what was going on except the cold and the pain, I couldn't speak. Support people said they continued requesting support but nurse said it was within range. Until the baby went into distress on monitor.  Ob called in then. The OB looked for 2 minutes and said its an emergency. Was wheeled to theatre immediately staff and support getting dressed while running i don't remember any of this. Just remember white lights on ceiling. Baby born via c section within 30 mins of OB arrival. Everything became clearer again when getting wheeled to recovery.

Was put in recovery room and told would be moved next day. Room was tiny cramped and didn't have adequate space for support person and the baby. Didn't get moved the next day we kept asking and asking and got told they were getting room available, noted another family getting room after arriving after us. I felt the nurses ignored or just said soon. It took an older nurse who came back 2 days later and was shocked we hadn't been moved to go tell the other nurses to do something and then told us we needed to be more firm with them. We then got mover to bigger room with more space but I felt we got very little support from nurses, medication took a long time to come , no one to help or teach basics about newborn. I couldn't lift baby but it would take them so long to respond that I would start attempting to do it. Paediatrician was good, ear person great, ob good as well. 1 or 2 nurses good but the rest we saw not so much..

Heard similar stories from a couple of other mothers in playgroup from same hospital.

I'm still trying to figure all this out never got full answers on why this happened.

Dear Summer,

I appreciate you taking the time to write about your recent admission at Joondalup Health Campus (JHC). I was deeply saddened to read of your experience and that you have left our hospital feeling unsupported as a first-time mother.

In line with the values of our organisation, the expectation is that all staff at JHC demonstrate compassion, empathy, respect and professionalism towards patients and provide the required clinical and emotional support. I would like to sincerely apologise that this was not your experience.

We would value the opportunity to undertake a review of the concerns you have raised and invite you to contact with our Consumer Liaison Team at consumerliaison.jhc@ramsayhealth.com.au.

We are committed to working with our patients and community to ensure that we deliver a service that meets their needs and expectations, and I would like to thank you for your assistance with this process.

Kind Regards

David Dineen
