"My experience at the Emergency Department as a new mother"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I attended the Emergency Department at Bunbury Regional Hospital today for treatment of mastitis.

I would first like to acknowledge the excellent care I received. From triage through to treatment, the staff were attentive and professional. The doctors were thorough in their examination and treatment plan, and the nurses kept me informed at every stage of my care. I felt well supported throughout my visit.

As a new mother with a breastfed newborn, the only difficulty I encountered was trying to breastfeed while seated in the upright waiting area chairs while receiving IV treatment. With one arm restricted due to the IV line, I found it quite difficult to position my baby comfortably and safely. It felt awkward and physically uncomfortable for both of us.

If the department were equipped with one or two recliner-style chairs, it could make a meaningful difference for patients in similar situations.

I believe recliners would greatly assist breastfeeding mothers who may need to feed their babies while receiving treatment. They could also benefit patients with other conditions such as those receiving IV therapy, patients experiencing pain, fatigue, pregnancy-related conditions, or anyone who requires additional support and comfort while seated for extended periods.

Introducing a small number of recliner chairs could significantly improve patient comfort and accessibility in the Emergency Department environment.

Thank you again to the staff for the care I received today.

Dear Tairneanach

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback, and I’m so pleased to hear that you felt well cared for by our team throughout your visit. Our staff work hard to provide safe, compassionate care, and it’s wonderful to know this was your experience.

I’m also really sorry to hear how difficult it was to breastfeed your newborn while receiving IV treatment, particularly in a busy Emergency Department and while you were feeling unwell. Managing this with limited mobility from an IV line is understandably challenging, and your feedback highlights an important comfort and accessibility issue.

We do have a small number of recliner-style chairs available within the department, and I apologise that this option wasn’t offered to you on the day. We have shared your feedback with our team and incorporated it into staff education to ensure we are more proactive in supporting breastfeeding parents and others who may benefit from alternative seating during treatment.

Thank you again for your kind words and for raising this thoughtful suggestion—it genuinely helps us improve the experience for future patients.

Kind regards,

Amber Hargans
