"Skin Cancer and Hith"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Hospital in the Home Service (HITH)

(as the patient),

In January I needed major facial surgery to excise a tumor caused by skin cancer. Was in hospital for 8 days recovery (I got out early to care for my 93 yo mum).

A Help In The Home nurse was arranged, who visited me daily to check the drain bottle  I was connected to the drain the large leg would where my skin graft and muscle was taken from for my face, and a Speech Pathologist and a Dietician visited me at home 2 times each plus telephone advice and check-ups.

The service was very professional and friendly, if some of the nurses were still training in various specialties.

It has now been over 2 months since my op; HITH lasted until my drain was taking just a low amount of fluid (over 2 weeks). when I was discharged from their daily care.

I can still seek help or information from the S.Pathologist and Dietician if/when needed.

Dear Sun_Burned,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and the Hospital in the Home (HITH) service.

I am very sorry to hear about the seriousness of your illness and the major facial surgery you required. I appreciate you describing the services that supported you on your recovery journey following your discharge home from hospital. It is encouraging to read that the HITH nurses, Speech Pathologist and Dietitian were able to support you at home during what sounds like a very challenging period, particularly while you were also caring for your mother.

I am pleased to hear that you found the service professional and friendly, and that the daily nursing visits and allied health follow‑up, helped you manage your recovery safely at home.

It is gratifying to know that you are still able to access support from Speech Pathology and Dietetics if needed.

Thank you again for sharing your experience. I will ensure your feedback is passed on to the HITH team and the clinicians involved.

I wish you all the best with your ongoing recovery.

Kind regards

Dr Jodi Graham

Executive Director SCGOPHCG
