I presented at Kalgoorlie Hospital early in the morning, convinced I was going into labour. I was already booked to be induced that day, so we were prepared to be there. As a first-time mum, I was feeling a mix of excitement and nerves.
My husband and I arrived early and were quickly settled into a room. Observations were taken, and I was closely monitored by the midwives. Both the doctor and anaesthetist visited to go over the plan for the day, which helped put me at ease.
After receiving an epidural, I continued to progress well in active labour. When I reached 8cm, my waters broke, and things moved quite quickly from there. It was an intense and, at times, overwhelming experience with the pain, pressure, and multiple staff coming in and out of the room. There was a lot happening around me, but I still felt supported.
I was close to needing an episiotomy, but with what the doctor said would be my final push, I was able to deliver my son. He was placed straight on my chest, and we were able to enjoy that beautiful golden hour together with my husband by my side.
After being stitched up and once the feeling returned to my legs, I was able to shower and was then moved from the birthing suite to a room. My husband and I spent some quiet time with our new baby, and I was able to rest and eat.
Unfortunately, my husband wasn’t allowed to stay overnight, which was upsetting after such a significant experience. However, the midwives were very understanding and allowed him to return before visiting hours the following day, as I was in a room on my own.
Throughout our stay, both my baby and I were very well cared for. I initially struggled with breastfeeding, but with the support, knowledge, and patience of multiple midwives, I was introduced to a nipple shield and was able to successfully get my baby feeding.
All necessary tests were completed before discharge, and we received the all-clear from the doctors. We were also reassured that we could contact the hospital if we had any concerns, which gave us great peace of mind.
We stayed just over 48 hours. After discharge, we returned the following day for a weight check and again the day after due to concerns about our baby’s belly button and umbilical cord. On both occasions, we felt supported and well looked after.
Overall, we had a fantastic experience. We are incredibly grateful to all the staff—midwives and doctors—who supported us through such a special and life-changing time.
