"Door to the area"

About: Broome Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Sleeping in the short stay area at Broome ED was extremely challenging due to constant disruptions throughout the night. The door to the area is broken and slams loudly every time someone enters or exits, which happens frequently. As a result, patients are repeatedly woken—sometimes every five minutes—making it nearly impossible to get any meaningful rest. Even as someone who was not critically ill, the lack of sleep left me feeling exhausted, anxious, and irritable. This raises serious concerns about the impact on patients who are critically unwell, for whom rest is essential to recovery. The environment, as it stands, does not support healing and may be contributing to additional stress and deterioration in already vulnerable patients.

I want to acknowledge that the staff were very understanding of the situation and explained that they were aware of the issue and had previously raised concerns, although no action has yet been taken. Throughout my stay, all staff were professional, kind, and compassionate in their care, despite the challenging environment.

Dear indusmn67,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and for your kind words about our staff. We are very pleased to hear that you felt supported and well cared for by the team during your stay, and we will be sure to pass on your comments to them.

We are sorry to hear about the disruptions you experienced overnight and understand how important rest is to recovery. We will follow up on the issue with the short stay area door with our maintenance team to prevent it from slamming and minimise noise where possible. Feedback like yours is important to us, as it helps highlight areas where improvements are needed. We hope you are feeling much better now and wish you well in your recovery.

Kind regards,

Millie Stewart
