"Compassion and Support in Dad’s Final Days"

About: Wheatbelt Regional Palliative Care

(as a relative),

Over the Easter period, in the final days of Dad’s life, our family was supported in the most profound and meaningful way by Garth, Clinical Nurse with the Wheatbelt Palliative Team. Dad passed away on 8 April 2026 after suffering from mesothelioma, and during this incredibly difficult time, Garth’s care made an immeasurable difference to Dad and to all of us.

From the fist interaction, Garth took the time to genuinely connect with Dad, as well as with key members of our family. He showed a deep interest in understanding not only Dad’s physical needs, but who he was as a person, what mattered to him, and what mattered to us as a family. This helped ensure that Dad’s pain and suffering were managed with compassion, dignity, and respect, and that we felt informed and supported every step of the way.

Garth’s caring, empathetic, and attentive approach gave us confidence to care for Dad in his final days. He listened carefully, responded thoughtfully, and always made us feel that no question or concern was too small. His calm presence and reassurance helped ease some of the fear and uncertainty that naturally surrounds the end of life, allowing us to focus on being with Dad and providing him with what he needed most.

One moment that meant an enormous amount to Dad was when Garth visited our family farm. Being there, on country that held so much meaning and history for him, brought Dad comfort and peace. That Garth took the time to come to the farm demonstrated a level of care that went well beyond clinical duty—it was deeply personal, and it meant the world to Dad and to us.

Knowing that Garth was available at the end of the phone, day or night, was incredibly reassuring. That level of ongoing support made us feel safe and held during an overwhelming time. It gave us peace of mind to know that we were not alone and that expert, compassionate help was always within reach.

Garth’s dedication, kindness, and humanity during Dad’s final days will never be forgotten by our family. His support helped us navigate one of the most challenging periods of our lives with greater calm, confidence, and love. We are profoundly grateful for the care he gave to Dad, and for the compassion he extended to our entire family. Thank you Garth.

Dear gammasx94,

Thank you for taking the time to share such a heartfelt reflection on your Dad’s care.

Please accept my sincere condolences to you and your family. Your words paint a picture not only of the care your Dad received, but also of the love and connection that surrounded him in his final days.

Your feedback about Garth is incredibly meaningful. The way you’ve described his approach, taking the time to understand who your Dad was, being present, and supporting you as a family, reflects the very best of palliative care. Garth will be deeply touched to know the difference he made during such an important time.

What comes through strongly in your feedback is not just the care provided by one clinician, but a team coming together with a shared focus on ensuring your Dad was cared for with dignity and comfort, in a place that meant so much to him.

End of life care is a privilege, and to hear that your family felt supported, informed, and able to focus on being with your Dad means a great deal to all of us.

I will ensure your kind words are shared with Garth and the entire Wheatbelt Regional Palliative Care team. They are a passionate and dedicated group, and your message will mean a great deal to them.

Thank you again for allowing us to be part of your Dad’s journey.

Kind regards,
Basil Paulose
