"Door slamming/Overlooked Vulnerable Patient"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital

(as the patient),

I attended a clinic today and saw a Dr about prosthetics. There was a junior Dr working under my doctor who I recall stomped and slammed the door to the consulting room every time they entered or exited. 20 people in the waiting room would jump and become uneasy every time the doctor did it.

I said to the nurse when I was having my initial check up something like “that Dr needs to be asked to stop slamming the door it making people upset” and I recall the nurse laughed and said they are just like that.

Another consumer I saw in Area B waiting room had to move to the opposite side of the room because the door slamming Dr was making the wall shake whenever they slammed it shut. I almost said something to the senior specialist who was overseeing the clinic, but I thought this may compromise my care.

I believe that people like this who treat patients with disdain and disregard the ambient safety when they are feeling already vulnerable when attending hospital need some corrective feedback. The door slamming would have occurred over 25 times and is, in my opinion, manifestly disrespectful.

Also in front of all of the patients in the afternoon it was discovered in front of all of a full waiting room that an elderly patient with a walker had been overlooked from the morning clinic and had been waiting since the morning. A nurse had to take the patient to a separate building to find the clinic Dr from the earlier clinic. All of this does not give me much confidence in the Sydney Eye Hospital.

Dear Respect Please,

Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

We are sorry to hear about your experience while attending the clinic. We acknowledge that repeated loud door slamming in the waiting area would have been unsettling for you and other patients nearby.

We are concerned to hear about the elderly patient who you saw waiting for an extended period due to potentially overbooked appointments. We will share your feedback with the manager and relevant clinic team for review. This will allow the team to reflect on the concerns raised, including the impact of noise and environmental factors on patient comfort and processes for monitoring patients waiting for appointments.

If you would like your concerns formally reviewed, please contact us on SESLHD-SSEHConsumerFeedback@health.nsw.gov.au so they can look into the matter further and follow up with you directly.

Thank you again for your feedback.
