"Being a patient & hospital care"

About: Swan Hill District Hospital / District Nursing/Hospital in The Home Swan Hill District Hospital / Midwifery Department Swan Hill District Hospital / Theatre / Day Procedure Unit

(as the patient),

I was admitted to the Swan Hill Hospital as I was booked into have a laparoscopic hysterectomy with Dr Nick. Theatre staff were absolutely amazing from Alisha in the office as I was soooo anxious & nervous and unable to have my husband with me while waiting, anaesthetist- Dr Marlise was very caring & explained everything so well, nurses in theatre ( Maria - who was very caring and gave me a mummy cuddle as I was having my epidural as I was in tears).

Well done theatre Staff - be proud.

Nurses on the midwifery ward ranged from caring and not caring, considering on one night there was myself and another patient in the same room and they were discharged the next morning which left me. I felt the patient was more caring & concerned about me.

I was advised mid morning that I was ready to go home and I wasn’t aware & I didn’t feel like I was ready.

My husband was working over at Sea Lake and I had to ring him to pick me up from hospital, he settled me at home and had to go back to work at Sea Lake as we both were not aware I was going home on this day and my adult children were out of town being the long weekend.

Anyway…

A couple of days later in the afternoon I received a phone call from the OT department asking if I require/ would like mobility aids for my recovery.

I advised thanks for your offer, however it is a bit late now, I have had to compromise with what I had, ( plastic outdoor chair in the shower to sit on and a granny walker to assist myself with walking as I was light headed & felt wheezy & dizzy).

Staff member said I can ring back if needed.

Food was absolutely amazing - be proud of the menu.

Hospital room was very clean and cleaners conducted their job quietly & friendly.

Disappointing to hear when a neighbour has the same procedure recently gets offered home help & I didn’t ???

Dear leatherwf73,

Thank you for the kind words in relation to the Theatre staff and the food provided during your stay. I apologise that your discharge planning and not all your experience with the nurses and midwifery staff was to the level we aspire too. I will feedback to the NUM of Midwifery to ensure we learn from your admission.

Hope you have recovered well.

Regards

Jonathan Sparrow
