Just after midnight on Friday the 1-5-26, we met our beautiful baby girl for the first time.
The lead up to this amazing experience had been super positive. The maternity staff, midwife’s and doctors at the Broome hospital have always made us feel super supported and reassured throughout, especially Georgie, our MGP midwife, truly an angel from heaven who is the most caring and supportive person any first time parents could ask for.
We attended the positive birthing program in the month leading up to the birth. We found this really helpful, full of information and videos showing other families birthing stories, which in hindsight, potentially led dad into a slight false sense of security. Seeing videos of woman breathing through contractions and baby’s coming into the world in such a calm fashion was empowering for both of us.
My wife practiced the breathing techniques she’d learn at home that night, as she was having the first intense contractions, steadily increasing in strength and frequency. Before long, it was clear the time had come to head to the hospital and by the time we got from the lounge room to the car, it was feeling like we might have left it a little too long at home as mum to be was clearly in some serious pain now.
It was late in the evening when we hastily made our way into birthing sweet No2. We’d been advised in the lead up that it was a particularly busy time at the maturity ward so having one of the dedicated suits available was a nice surprise. The ward staff Moly and Tina who set us up in the room did a great job to make us feel supported and comfortable, despite the level of bleeding which came as an unsettling surprise to dad who’d only seen perfect births up to this point. It felt like no time before Georgie, our MGP midwife came flying through the doors like a super hero who seems to operate at peak performance despite never seeming to get enough sleep between catching baby’s. Georgie’s presence brought a sense of calm to the entire room and it felt like the pressure lifted from the shoulders of the younger ward staff in the room who were doing a great job looking after both of us up to this point. A special shout out to Dr Samara who was there when it mattered to help bring our girl out as quickly as possible, as baby and mum were starting to show signs of tiring. Dr Samara’s clear and compassionate style of communication made us feel like what ever was about to happen would be fine because she knew exactly what she was doing and would do what ever was necessary to keep mum and baby safe.
And then she was out, Georgie doing what she does best, with seemingly effortless skill. A true master of her field.
The next 72 hours has seen the same level of support from all Broome hospital staff. Thank you everyone involved in the maternity ward. You’ve all been fantastic. It’s truely the most important work you all do, please know it does not go unnoticed!
