"Emergency Department Care and Backlog"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as other),

At the time of writing this, I was in Fiona Stanley Emergency waiting room. I was witnessing elderly patients in visible agony being told to wait after already waiting some almost up to 8 hours. In bright lights.

And why are doctors/nurses calling for the elderly with, I believe, obvious fall risks to come to them rather than coming to get them carefully?! Just had to witness an elderly lady who, already had a fall with a bandaged head and bleeding 10 minutes prior to being called, almost take another bad fall right here in the waiting room on top of another patient.

I am also here with a high-pressure neurological condition and vision changes. Seeing what I see as the lack of basic dignity for the Vulnerable and Elderly is, in my opinion, staggering and shameful for a hospital claiming their specific vision and values!

It is 2026 care needs to Improve for our Elderly. And not later, Now. I believe there are no acceptable excuses anymore!

Dear Balyaka Yorgah,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I am sincerely sorry to hear about the distress and concern you felt whilst in our Emergency Department. Providing safe, compassionate and respectful care to all consumers, particularly elderly and vulnerable patients, is of utmost importance to us, and we regret that what you witnessed did not reflect the standard of care we strive to provide.

I want to reassure you that your feedback has been shared with the Emergency Department leadership team for review and their consideration to help identify any opportunities for improvement in both patient care and service delivery processes.

Thank you once again for sharing your experience. Your feedback is valued and plays an important role in helping us improve the care we provide, and I appreciate you taking the time to raise your concerns. Should you wish to discuss this further, you can contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service (PFLS) on (08) 6152 4013 during business hours, or via email at FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au.

Kind regards,

Luke Dix
