"Toenail Troubles"

About: Albany Health Campus / Podiatry

(as a parent/guardian),

I am absolutely thrilled with the podiatry team through the Allied Health Services at Albany Hospital.

My soon to be 19-year-old son who is on the Autism Spectrum and has Generalised Anxiety Disorder, has had ongoing issues with ingrown toenails causing infection. We have spent many years at appointments where my son would not allow anyone to touch his sore toes. Antibiotics and topical treatments treated the symptoms but not the cause. Things got so bad a couple of years ago that my son had to be put under a general anesthetic to have a simple procedure done to both his toes. This gave him two years of reprieve. Recently one of the toes has flared up again. Our GP referred him straight to the podiatry clinic and the team there went above and beyond to help. Today with lots of support, kindness, reassurance and understanding my son was able to push through his anxiety and have his nail surgery done under a local anesthetic. I can't explain the relief I feel as my son carer to know now that if problems arise in the future there is a great team to help us through it.
