"Waiting for my child"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My child was brought into the hospital with huge gash on their head. We were waiting to be seen in the main area when we were then told to go into RADA, we had four patients before us, we waited there. later on I went to ask how much longer we were then told we would be coming back into the main part. Waiting now for another 7 people before my child's turn

I understand they have others to see but I felt to not tell people they were closing that area was damn annoying .

I believe they want people to be respectful but it goes both ways.

Dear atlaseh39

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I am sorry to hear about the stress and frustration you and your child experienced. Being moved between areas without a clear explanation, and then finding the wait was longer than expected, would understandably have been upsetting. You should have been told the Rapid Assessment and Discharge Area was closing and what this meant for your child’s place in the queue.

We expect our staff to communicate openly and respectfully with families, especially when processes change or wait times increase. Your experience shows we did not meet that standard, and I apologise for the added distress this caused. Your comments have been shared with the team so we can reinforce the importance of timely, respectful communication.

Thank you again for raising this. You are right that respect goes both ways, and we are committed to improving this for future patients and families.

Kind regards

Kylie Fawcett
