"Needing a CT machine closer to Manjimup"

About: Bridgetown Hospital / Emergency Department Bunbury Hospital

(as a relative),

My parent has an abdominal Aneurysm that is being monitored. Recently, they were having stabbing pains in their abdomen and needed an urgent scan to rule out the aneurysm.  I had to drive my parent to Bunbury hospital for an urgent CT. Of course there were road works and slow vehicles on our 1hr 20min drive. (Ambulances where all busy).

Luckily it was not the aneurysm.

I believe Manjimup Hospital has room for a CT machine? As a service town, and the closest CT machines are 1hr20min away, why does Manjimup not have a CT machine! how much less stress I believe a lot of people would have! difference between life or death for some people.

We also then had an interesting trip home, as my parent was given a strong pain killer for the pain. They ended up reacting to this and halfway back to Bridgetown passed out and vomited at the same time in the car.. as I was trying to pull over carefully. I got my parent back to Bridgetown hospital eventually, where they looked after them well.

I believe all this could have been avoided if the machine was local.

My parentis fine now and back to work.

Dear serpensdx88,

Thank you sincerely for sharing the care experience for your parent, and for you when supporting their care, during their referral to Bunbury Regional Hospital.

It can be difficult, stressful, and worrying when family is ill, especially when having to leave home to travel. I’m very sorry this couldn’t have gone smoother for your parent and you, and I am glad to hear your parent is fine and back at work now.

Thank you also for advocating for a CT scanner at Warren hospital. Whilst installation of a CT Scanner wasn’t part of the new Warren hospital redevelopment in 2018 WA Country Health Service - Completed project - Warren Health Service, I recognise this is of growing importance to the community and will ensure this is identified in future service development planning opportunities.

If you would like to discuss the care of your parent more, please do not hesitate to contact me. My name is Jeremy Higgins, and I am the District Director, and I can be contacted on M: 0438 062 341. Alternatively, if you prefer to discuss the care issues with our Customer Liaison Officer Debbie, they are contactable during office hours on 08 9722 1521.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Higgins

District Director
