"Cancer diagnosis and hospital"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department Bunbury Hospital / Outpatients Clinic

(as the patient),

Late last year I was feeling very unwell so much so that my son took me to hospital in Bridgetown where I was admitted. I was very well looked after but needed to go to Bunbury for tests. I was collected from Bridgetown hospital by my son and taken to Bunbury emergency department. I waited some hours when they finally admitted me in the ED for the night. The next day they put me in an office /rest room for the night. I shared it with two other people.  It had no toilet or shower but we could use one in the corridor. You couldn't lock the door so one lady refused to use the shower. I was in a good room to myself one night and a shared four bed room for at least three nights. I was well looked after.

I was told I had plurasy after an ultrasound on day two and they drained my plura near my lungs on day seven. They tested it. I felt much better and was discharged. I never received my discharge notes and was told to take antibiotics and go to my dr. I was told I'd hear from them with the results.

In January I received a call from a consultant physician who told me I had mesothelioma. I got a letter advising I had an appointment with a respiratory doctor later that month. They told me I had mesothelioma and said it was terminal. I might live between 1 and 4 years. I was very sad as I felt they gave me no hope. I have not received any further treatment as I feel well and no tests have lead to further treatment yet.

Hello februaryyc74,

Thank you for reaching out with your feedback about your experience at Bridgetown Hospital and Bunbury Hospital late last year. I was very saddened to read your feedback and hear of your diagnosis.

I am glad to hear of your positive experience at Bridgetown Hospital, and I will be sure to pass along your thanks for the excellent care you received.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience at Bunbury Hospital, and I would like to be able to explore this further with you to identify improvements that can be made to ensure both your care is improved moving forward, that prior care issues are addressed for the next consumers, and ensure follow up care is promptly arranged for you. It would be much appreciated if you can contact myself on 08 9722 1484 or via email at jacinta.herbert@health.wa.gov.au so we can find out some more information and support you.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Many thanks
