"Child's broken thumb"

About: Armadale Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My child injured their hand during a baseball game. I took them to Armadale ED after the game as their hand had gotten swollen and they couldn't move their thumb or twist their wrist. The hospital took an xray. We were told there is no breaks or fractures, to ice it for 20 minutes every 2 hours and my child was given a talk about knowing when they are injured or their body is just sore by the nurse practitioner we saw.

After a week of being in the same constant pain with the same limited movement in their thumb and hand I took my child to urgent care. The doctor pulled up the xray taken by the hospital the week prior and there was a fracture on the xray which the radiologist had indicated. My child was put in a cast there and then and a referral was sent to the fracture clinic.

If we weren't dismissed I believe my child wouldn't have had to go through the pain they did. Being told to listen to their body when that's exactly what my child did is wrong.

Dear Unhappyparent

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m very sorry to hear what your child has been through, and I understand how distressing it must have been to discover a fracture after a week of ongoing pain.

As Care Opinion is an anonymous platform, we are unable to reach out to you directly. However, we would really like the opportunity to review what occurred and understand how we can improve.

I encourage you to contact our Consumer Liaison Service on 9391 1153 or via email at AKG_Consumerliaison@health.wa.gov.au, who will ensure this matter is fully investigated.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your concerns.

Kind regards
