"Birth and pregnancy"

About: Kununurra Hospital / Maternity Ward

(as the patient),

I was cared for during pregnancy in 2022 and in 2026 in Kununurra hospital.

During my 2022/23 pregnancy I was cared for at Kununurra hospital where I was told that I wouldn't be allowed to birth in water, that it was too "risky". I was dismissed for wanting a doula present as a support person by drs.

Midwife care was warm and friendly but very inconsistent and I was given multiple conflicting opinions about managing HG. I then moved to Bunbury at about 32 weeks where I gave birth. I had access to an MGP midwife, continuity of care and a birth pool.

I had a hugely positive experience and felt incredibly empowered to start motherhood strong. I truly feel this was down to continuity of care and the amazing facilities at the other hospital.

In my 2026 birth I was cared for at Kununurra hospital again where I was again told there wouldn't be any option for continuity of care of a birth pool. This lead to a lot of anxiety prior to birth and purchasing of my own tens machine which I used for a physiological birth. I had a beautiful midwife however had only met her during labour which wasn't ideal.

I'd love to see access to birth pools, slings and tens machiness specifically for birth easily accessible in Kununurra. An mgp or continuity of care program would make a huge difference to the mental health of mums who are already facing extra layers of isolation in such a remote location, often being away from family and support networks.

After speaking to many mums I belief lots more women would choose to birth here knowing those things are in place. There can be a sense of fear about Kununurra hospital being "behind" or "dismissive of women" in the community at times which i think could be easily improved.

My midwives were all excellent and I'd like to specifically acknowledge Bec a midwife in Kununurra who was incredibly warm and professional and made every effort to offer continuity when possible.

Dear N-Kununurra – thank you for sharing your story on your pregnancy and birth experiences.

We are sorry you felt dismissed during your previous birth about the use of a Doula, as our Midwifery and Obstetric team are conscious of encouraging and enabling a positive birthing experience which includes being receptive of a woman’s choice to have a doula as a support person at their birth.

Whilst noting you purchased a TENs machine which you used during your birthing experience, Kununurra Hospital does have machines that can be used in early labour at home/hospital, and we encourage women to speak to the Physiotherapy team who also have TENs machines for hire and use during labour and birth.

We are pleased to hear the Midwives supported you through your pregnancy noting a mention to Bec for the care and support given.

Over the past 12 months we have been successful in developing and building on our Midwifery workforce to support stability within the team and support a positive experience for the women in our community. The Midwives at our hospital work to provide continuity throughout the antenatal period and during postnatal care. We continue to review our models of Midwifery care to support choice and safe care for our women.

We are currently working to support a regular “Meet the Midwives" morning tea event, where women can come to the hospital and meet our team of Midwives who will be involved in their care during their pregnancy and birthing experience. More details will be shared with all our women soon.

Thank you for taking time to provide your feedback as this assists in the ongoing review of our care services and care provided.

Kind regards,

Hanneke Schoe
