"Disruptive Patient causing stress"

About: Geraldton Hospital / General Ward

(as the patient),

During my admission to the ward recently i was in alot of pain and was very stressed and sick. Another patient came in the next day later and was put in the bed opposite mine. I felt they displayed highly disruptive behaviour throughout the day and night. I recall they were verbally abusive toward nursing staff, yelling and swearing repeatedly, and this continued until approximately 3am. As a patient who was unwell and in pain, the lack of sleep and ongoing disturbance caused me significant distress — as it did for the other patients around me im sure, as this patient was so loud .

When I asked the patient to please keep the noise down so we could all sleep, they responded with aggressive and offensive language directed at me. The patient then woke again at 6:30am yelling obscene language and again targeting me as i told themto be quiet from that night which caused me further anxiety and upset.

As a result of the sustained stress and sleep deprivation, I suffered an anxiety attack.

I was also informed by nursing staff that this patient was known to be as a frequent visitor. If this is the case, I would question why a behaviour management plan was not already in place to minimise the impact on other vulnerable patients sharing the ward about 13 of us.

I understand that patients with mental health conditions require compassionate care, and I have no wish to minimise that. However, I believe the situation was not managed in a way that protected the other vulnerable patients in the ward, including myself i hope i never have to go there for care again i was more stressed when i left.

I note that Geraldton Regional Hospital has a Zero Tolerance policy regarding disruptive behaviour. I would appreciate clarification on how this policy applies when the impact is on patients, and what procedures are in place to manage such situations more promptly in future.

Dear waltzkx67,

Thank you for taking time out of your recovery to share your experience with us on Care Opinion.

I was very sorry to read that your admission at the Geraldton Health Campus was disrupted by the actions of another patient and this had such a negative impact on your stay and caused you such anxiety. Our aim is to provide a calming and healing environment and I offer my sincere apologies that we were not able to provide this for you.

As part of the ongoing redevelopment at Geraldton Health Campus, we are later this year opening an Acute Psychiatric Unit with 15 bed capability. This will allow our mental health patients to be accommodated in a purpose-built environment designed specifically for their needs. This will also be of benefit to the inpatients in the general ward and I hope this will provide a more comfortable experience.

You are correct that we do not tolerate abuse to either other patients or our staff, there are clear guidelines in place to govern this. The staff and security team are fully empowered to take action to ensure the safety and wellbeing across the campus and the management team fully support and appreciate their efforts.

We acknowledge that interactions with the health system can be a challenging and stressful time. If at any time you feel that you are not receiving the care or treatment you need, we have a service at the hospital called Aishwarya’s CARE Call. You may notice posters about Aishwarya’s CARE Call in our Emergency Departments – this is a 3-step process for patients, carers and family members to use if they are worried they, or a person they care for, are getting sicker in hospital. In the Midwest, no matter what public hospital you go to this number is 1800 316 729 or you can find more information at WA Country Health Service - Aishwarya’s CARE Call.

I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you and apologise personally for your experience. My name is Cameron Ross I am the District Director Geraldton Health Campus. I can be contacted on either 9956 2403.

I do hope you are continuing to recover and are feeling well.

Regards

Cameron Ross
