I wanted to share my appreciation for the wonderful care my mum received last night, from the moment help arrived at her door to her time in the ED.
Pip and Chris, the paramedics who attended her home, were friendly, kind, and immediately reassuring. They made a distressing situation feel much calmer, and we are so grateful for the care they showed.
In the ED, nurse Shannon continued that same standard of compassionate care. She made sure I had somewhere to sit, regularly checked that my mum's pain was being managed, and took the time to offer me tea and coffee. These small acts of kindness meant so much during a difficult time.
I do want to note that we waited six hours from arrival to X-ray. The waiting room was busy, and it was later explained that ED short stay was full of medical patients due to ward capacity pressures. Being with my mum in significant pain for that length of time was very stressful, and I understand this reflects a systemic pressure rather than a failure of the staff on the floor.
What carried us through that wait was the warmth and professionalism of the nurses. Shannon, Pip, and Chris are exactly the kind of healthcare professionals who make people feel seen and cared for - not just as patients, but as families going through something hard. We are so lucky to have people like them, and they are a credit to the healthcare system and deserve acknowledgment and praise.
