"Staff that go above and beyond"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Maternity and Newborn Services

(as a relative),

I was the birthing partner for my sister at Geraldton Regional Hospital. Following some complications with the baby, the paediatrician made the decision to transfer the baby to Perth via RFDS. While we were grateful for the care and caution behind this decision, we felt the news was delivered quite bluntly, with little support offered to Mum, who was — understandably — already distressed.

I do, however, want to extend my gratitude and admiration for Tracey, the midwife on duty that morning. I felt she truly looked out for and advocated for my sister, who may have quietly “slipped through the cracks” without her. Tracey went above and beyond, making phone calls to ensure my sister and the baby both flew to Perth and were admitted to King Edward’s, where they received the care they needed.

It is my firm belief that this kind of genuine care is essential in this space. It has lasting impacts on early bonding and attachment between mum and baby, and can also lessen the impact of traumatic experiences like this one.

Tracey, I hope you see this and are celebrated for your work. I know for a fact that it is in your nature to do this as I remember interacting with you at my sister’s first birth too, where you were personable, professional and efficient all at the same time.

Dear CottonNest1,

Thank you for reaching out on Care Opinion and sharing your family’s experience with us.

Firstly, congratulations to your sister on the arrival of her baby, I hope they are both back in the Midwest and doing well.

Thank you for the kind words about Tracey and the manner she supported and advocated for your sister and her baby. Tracey is a very compassionate and patient centred midwife and we are truly grateful to have her warmth and professionalism supporting the new mums at Geraldton Health Campus. I will ensure your kind words are shared with her, so she knows the difference she made to your family and how appreciated she was. I will add my own appreciation of everything she and all her midwifery colleagues do to support the Midwest each and every day.

I was sorry to learn that some of the communication with your sister was blunt and it lacked support. We endeavour to provide a warm and supportive environment and I offer my apologies that was not entirely what your sister experienced. I have shared your feedback with the management team and this will be used for staff to reflect on their communication style and how we can continue to improve the service we provide.

Once again thank you for reaching out and congratulations on the new arrival.

Regards

Cameron Ross
