(as a parent/guardian),

I feel very sad when the nursing staff talk away in their own language laughing and sounding nasty and noone bothers to speak to me about my baby in english, it goes on for hours. Most of the time it is the nurses in charge, it seems to me so many of them are on their phones and not near the babies.

Dear listenqw12,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your baby's admission to 3B, our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

I was concerned to read of your experience, particularly that you were left feeling excluded from conversations about your baby's care, as well as your concerns regarding communication and interactions within the unit. Having a baby admitted to NICU is an emotional and overwhelming time for families, and parents should feel supported, informed and involved throughout their baby's admission. I am sorry this was not your experience.

Clear, respectful communication with families is a fundamental part of the care we strive to provide. Every family should feel welcomed, included and confident in approaching staff with questions or concerns. Professional, respectful communication is especially important in a NICU setting, where parents rely on staff to keep them informed and involved throughout their baby's admission.

I appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective. Your feedback has been shared with the NICU leadership team so they are aware of the matters you have raised and can consider opportunities to improve communication and ensure families feel valued partners in their baby's care.

We would welcome the opportunity to better understand the issues you have described and review them in more detail. If you feel comfortable doing so, please contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service (PFLS) via FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au or on (08) 6152 2222. Providing further information will enable us to investigate the matters you have raised and address them in line with our values and expectations of professional conduct.

Once again, thank you for sharing your feedback. I hope you and your baby are both doing well, and I wish you and your family all the very best.

Kind regards,

Luke Dix
