I have had a history of chest infections, coughing issues for a number of years. I recently had a significant event which through a process of tests etc culminated with a diagnosis of ‘extensive emphysema’ on my lungs. As I hadn’t had a cigarette in over 40 years this came as somewhat of a shock to both my doctor and myself. It did however give a reason for my symptoms and my state of health at the time. additionally I have liver, pancreas and heart issues that are still being worked through with the assistance of health specialists in a number of areas.
The effect of this diagnosis on me, despite tremendous family support and encouragement was to dent my confidence significantly as I felt that I was under a barrage of different medical issues that were overwhelming to me.
I spent some time initially at the Bairnsdale Regional Hospital where I was treated extremely well with medical staff intent on resolving non-related issues to my emphysema. I appreciate their efforts and expertise and the advice from them that i have taken on Board. Together with my regular doctor they have worked to inform me on all my medical problems.
On being discharged from Hospital I was recommended to go to the Allied Health Pulmonary Rehab sessions conducted at an outreach facility of the Hospital. As I had previously been to a Heart Rehab group in the past and found it beneficial I did attend the Pulmonary group.
Starting this group I did not have a lot of confidence in myself despite the fact that I have been an active person for a good while. The Allied Team that conduct the Rehab group at the Ross St Campus were, for me, just brilliant. While the exercises and discussions aided my physical health, the interactions with staff and fellow participants benefitted significantly my mental health.
I enjoy being challenged and love physical activity and this programme was so timely and appropriate for my needs at the time. There was no session that I did not benefit from. The information sessions all allowed us not only to learn but also to share our thoughts, our frustrations and our personal needs in a safe environment. I have no valid improvements that I could suggest, I never left a session feeling in any way dis-satisfied so I consider the programme of such a high standard.
I wish to highly commend all the staff who conduct the programme, the speakers who give their time to the programme and also my thanks to the other participants in my group who were also so supporting and encouraging to each other.
