"Experience with cardiac and aged care wards"

I visited a patient daily for several weeks. They started in Emergency Department, then Coronary Care Unit and finally Aged Care. The wards were very different, with huge impact on patient experience. 

I felt the ED was horrible. The doctor didn't seem to want to do anything to help. A few nurses seemed to know what they should do but the doctor tried to stop them and claimed what the nurses had seen couldn't have happened. Luckily the patient was able to recover enough on their own to get out of there. 

CCU was in the old part of the building and didn't look very impressive. However, the staff were almost 100% caring, gentle, technically skilled, hardworking; there were 2 or 3 who I felt were terrible but the rest of the team were able to cover for them so patients didn't suffer. 

Aged Care is in the new part of the building. Looks very nice - all the rooms are 1 or 2-beds, ensuites. But this was complete contrast to the staff attitudes and performance in the two Aged Care wards I experienced. One was very casual, staff skill level very low in my opinion, people seemed lazy and not to care about anything. The staff in the other one seemed skilled but didn't seem to care about patient welfare - I recall they ignored a patient who was literally choking and the family were calling for help.

Based on my experience, I guess with ED I just have to be lucky and get good doctor and nurses, but it seemed strange that the other three wards were so different to each other -  maybe it depends on the nursing unit manager and what they are like?
