"Only womens hospital in Perth"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Pelvic Pain Clinic

(as the patient),

I have been a patient at KEMH since 2019 for chronic pelvic pain due to endometriosis which has upended my life. Based on my experience, your "pelvic pain team" only ever dismissed me, they straight up told me it was all in my head and that it wasn't as bad as I was making it out to be. But for 3.5 years I tried everything that they said because I thought they knew better as they were the professionals, oh how wrong it seems I was. The refusal to refer me for further investigations made it so that endo growth worsened, along with my pain and I developed atypical endometrial hyperplasia and ended up getting a hysterectomy in order to avoid endometrial cancer.

I recently had another laproscopy in order to find and excise my endo. They found what was believed to be endo in 3 places and took a biopsy of what they could.

The lack of administrative follow up in the hospital I feel is beyond ridiculous, I called them 2.5 weeks after my surgery for my biopsy results and was informed that there was no bookings for a consult regarding my results, nor for my 12 week post op follow-up appointment.

The endo team admin pushed it through for me to receive a call, on this call I felt the dr was very cold and had no empathy or compassion for what I was dealing with, I told them my pain was worse and they did not even acknowledge that or ask follow up questions. They did not answer my questions as to what else the results stated (they gave me a very brief overview which i wasn't comfortable with) and refused to send me my results, telling me I had to do an FOI (even though I've never had to previously).

I have put in a request for an FOI and was told it could take up to 3 months (in my opinion, this is unlawful and a violation of the Freedom of Information Act, which states a max of 45 days to recieve information that is requested).

The biggest problem I feel there is with KEMH is that the outward public projection that you understand and are outstanding with dealing with women with endometriosis which I feel is completely false. I believe most of your staff are completely ill-equipped to help women with chronic pain problems. Listen to the educators in your hospital! They are right there! and ensure your staff are educated and equipped to manage this condition. Also, treat your staff better and you shall retain them and maybe you won't have as many admin problems (just what I have witnessed first-hand)

Dear Endosurvivor,

Thank you for taking the time to share your endometriosis journey. I was deeply saddened to read how long and painful this journey has been for you and how let down you have been left feeling with the care you received by the teams here at King Edward Memorial Hospital. I was disappointed to read how dismissed you felt while under the care of the pelvic pain team and furthermore your most recent experience after your laparoscopy with the endo team. I want to acknowledge how stressful it can be awaiting results and was saddened to read that when you received those results you felt they were not well explained to you and that the doctor lacked compassion to your situation.

I would encourage you to submit a formal complaint via email: WNHSCLS@health.wa.gov.au through our Consumer Liaison Service (CLS) who will be able to assist with a review into the concerns you have raised and provide you with a written response. The CLS will also be able to liaise with the Freedom of Information (FOI) department to ensure your request is managed in-line with the Freedom of Information Act 1992.

If you have any enquiries or concerns regarding the complaints process, please do not hesitate to contact the Consumer Liaison Service either via phone on 6458 1444 or email. We are committed to ensuring all women who attend King Edward Memorial Hospital feel safe and well cared for and by voicing your concerns we can make continuous improvements to ensure future patients do not have a similar experience.

Kind regards,

Karen
