"Request for Continued Funding for Physio Supervised Rehabilitation Services"

About: Community Physiotherapy Service (CPS)

(as a service user),

I was a healthy child till l was diagnosed with tuberculosis in my teenage years. My right lung was severely affected and as I grew older, l was diagnosed with asthma, COPD but medical staff later confirmed it's Bronchiectasis. As a result of this condition, I now acquired Pulmonary hypertension and was placed on supplemental oxygen since May, 2025.

In January, I was transferred from the Fiona Stanley Hospital Rehabilitation Physiotherapy Service to Cockburn, where I, along with others with similar conditions, now receive supervised maintenance physiotherapy from a Registered Physiotherapist, assisted by Curtin University physiotherapy students.

It is my understanding that funding for this program is due to expire at the end of this year. I would like to respectfully call upon the relevant authorities to consider continuing the funding and supporting this valuable service for those of us who benefit from it.

Since commencing rehabilitation after being placed on supplemental oxygen, I have not needed to attend an Emergency Department, nor have I had any reason to be readmitted to hospital. The services provided at the Cockburn Supervised Rehabilitation Centre have played an important role in helping me manage my activities of daily living (ADLs), maintain my independence, and preserve my quality of life.

I sincerely ask that you consider the significant benefits this program provides. I believe that continued, long-term funding could potentially save the government considerable healthcare costs and resources by reducing emergency presentations and hospital admissions. More importantly, I believe it would ensure that people like myself can continue to maintain our health, independence, and quality of life.

Please find it in your hearts to support the continuation of this important rehabilitation service for those of us who are privileged to benefit from the program. I sincerely hope that the Cockburn Rehabilitation Centre can continue to provide this much-needed service well into the future.

Dear dowhodaro,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and for your thoughtful feedback regarding the supervised pulmonary rehabilitation program at Cockburn.

We appreciate your willingness to share your health journey and the challenges you have faced over many years. It is particularly encouraging to hear that since participating in the supervised physiotherapy rehabilitation, you have been able to maintain your independence, manage your daily activities more effectively, and avoid emergency and hospital admissions. The insight you have provided about the benefits of the program, both for participants and the broader health system, is invaluable.

We understand your concerns regarding the future funding of the service and your desire to see the program continue. At this stage, planning beyond December is still being considered and we are actively exploring options to attempt to secure ongoing funding for the service at Cockburn. Patient experiences and outcomes such as those you have described are important considerations and help inform discussions about service planning and future delivery.

Thank you again for taking the time to advocate not only for yourself, but for others who benefit from this service. We are grateful for your contribution and wish you all the best with your ongoing health and rehabilitation.

Kind regards,

Hannah Whiting
