"Colonoscopy day surgery"

About: Armadale Hospital

(as the patient),

I had a colonoscopy scheduled 12pm

I was getting dizzy from waiting for so long without water due to the prep, was told they will rush me in, they never checked my obs when I believe they were meant to from the dizzy spells: once I got called in at 1:30pm from the dizzy spells was told I was third on the waitlist

I saw people who came in at 1:30 have their surgery before me, I didn't get done till 4pm

By 4:14pm I was drowsy and out of surgery; they discharged me by 4:30, I said I'm not ready to go I'm drowsy and still forced me to go. I went home itching, lack of treatment , I asked about results and they attached it to the paperwork provided to me but told me nothing else told me the doctor will give me advise when I see them.  I was not happy with my care at all.

Dear melonkz67

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your recent colonoscopy.

I am sorry to learn that you were dissatisfied with your experience and the care you received.

Patients attending our Endoscopy Unit for a procedure such as a colonoscopy are booked into either a morning or afternoon session rather than being allocated a specific procedure time. The time provided on the appointment letter is the admission time, which allows for pre-procedure assessments before the procedure takes place. Patients are also provided with information advising them to allow approximately four to six hours at the hospital, as procedure times can vary depending on clinical requirements on the day.

All patients having a procedure undergo routine observations during recovery and must meet discharge criteria before they can leave hospital. Where concerns are identified, further assessment and monitoring are undertaken as required.

Patients are provided with a copy of their procedure report prior to discharge. Depending on the findings, results may be discussed with the consultant before discharge, however, patients are generally advised to follow up with their referring doctor, such as their GP, within 7 to 10 days.

As Care Opinion is anonymous, I am unable to review the specific details of your care and can only provide general information regarding the processes in place. If you feel comfortable, I encourage you to contact our Consumer Liaison Service so that we can better understand and respond to your concerns. Consumer Liaison can be contacted on (08) 9391 1153 or via email at AKG_ConsumerLiaison@health.wa.gov.au.

Kind regards
