I was first seen by SCGH Hepatology in Dec-25, after a referral due to liver cirrhosis, was assessed for transplant in Jan-26, listed in Feb-26 and transplanted in Mar-26. Due to complications, I was re-transplanted Apr-26. In total I was in hospital for 7 weeks.
Being in hospital for so long, one learns patience. Nothing happens quickly unless it really needs to. This is an observation, not a criticism. The staff do their utmost with limited resources, and other patients are often more in need of that scanner than you are at any given moment.
The staff are truly amazing. From the senior consultants, registrars, doctors, nurses, phlebotomists, pharmacists, dieticians, physiotherapists, cleaners, caterers, and especially "the coffee guy", and the countless others I've probably missed, everyone I've seen goes above and beyond to keep you safe, to provide the highest levels of care, and to maintain your dignity at all times.
I was apprehensive about SCGH, due to the age of the buildings, having read certain unkind descriptions of the conditions. I now consider it a second home, I feel a deep sense of comfort whenever I visit for follow-up appointments, and had no concerns at all when returning for a brief 2 night stay for a minor procedure.
The ICU post-surgery provided excellent care in the few days prior to moving to ward G63 for both of my transplants.
I think Ward G63 is a well-managed environment, with very friendly staff. I will not list favorites, it would be a disservice to the rest, I was looked after by so many amazing people and they all deserve credit.
To anyone in WA facing down the prospect of a liver transplant, based on my experience, be assured you will be in very capable hands at SCGH.
