"A doctor's comments in urgent care"

About: Leongatha Memorial Hospital / Urgent Care Centre

(as the patient),

I had been running a fever for four days. I called nurses on call, who referred me on to a telehealth appointment with a doctor from 1800 medicare.  They told me they were rather concerned that I had a fever for 4 days with no noticeable cause and if I was still feeling this way in the morning I should go to urgent care.

Around 2:00 I went to Urgent Care at Leongatha Hospital in Victoria.  The nurse took my details, a urine sample, and later bloods.

About an hour after arriving, the doctor called me in.

I felt they made several comments the seemed to belittle my situation and downplay my experience. Here are a few of the key bits of the conversation that I recall stuck out:

Doc: So why are you here?

Me: I've had a fever for four days

Doc: So?

Me: And the telehealth doctor told me to come in today.

Doc: I'm not concerned at all

Doc: What temperature have your fevers been?

Me: Around 39.5 degrees

Doc: Oh.  In my family, if it's not over 40 it's not a fever

when leaving urgent care, walking out past the nurses station

Doc: And you might want to drink a cup of concrete

Nurses: (sounds of shock that the doctor would say that)

Doc: (to nurses) I was polite about it.

I don't think there is ever a cause for a doctor to tell a patient to drink a cup of concrete.

If the doctors apparent problem is with the on line doctor's advice, that's not my problem. I was just doing what I was asked to, but left feeling pretty crappy about the whole situation.
