My family and I were assured by the clinical care staff at Arcare Aranda that my parent would be properly cared for as they had complex clinical needs. Unfortunately, based on my experience of my parent's 2 months care in 2026, I believe those assurances were not met.
My concerns included significant weight loss and what I understood to be inadequate monitoring of their weight. I was told by clinical staff that their weight loss could be due to my parent's anxiety, but I remained concerned that their physical health was not being adequately assessed or managed. I was also concerned about their hygiene, as well as the management of their pressure sores. In addition, requests for specialist clinical support—including a dietitian and physiotherapist—did not, in my opinion, receive adequate responses.
Because of the weight loss and my concerns for my parent's physical and psychological wellbeing, I asked for my parent to be transported to North Canberra Hospital. My parent had also told me that they no longer wanted to remain at the facility.
This experience has made me concerned about how elderly people in the community are really being looked after in aged care facilities.
