My child was brought in by ambulance following a severe allergic reaction that included facial swelling, widespread hives, and vomiting. After receiving treatment and being monitored, we experienced what I felt was completely unacceptable care during the discharge process.
The treating doctor initially claimed my child did not even need an allergy plan. I had to advocate heavily just to get a basic allergy plan, and staff seemingly resisted issuing an Anaphylaxis Action Plan or an EpiPen prescription. I recall the medical team tried to claim an EpiPen is not needed unless the throat closes or wheezing is persistent. I believe the apparent withholding proper allergy management for a multi-system reaction placed my child's safety at risk.
When I questioned this decision based on my experience working with children, I recall staff questioned my background in what I felt was a dismissive tone. Both doctors then walked into the hallway and seemingly spoke negatively about me to other colleagues where I could hear them.
When the prescription was finally written, the doctor walked into the room, threw the paperwork onto the bed, and walked off while continuing to talk about me to staff in the corridor.
As a parent advocating for my child during a frightening medical emergency, being met with apparent hostility, dismissiveness, and gossip from healthcare professionals is completely unacceptable in my opinion.
"Treated with disrespect for advocating for my child's medical safety"
