"World class care for elderly mother"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department Bunbury Hospital / Surgical Ward

(as a relative),

My mother became unwell while visiting her children in Bunbury and needed emergency surgery. She was seen in Bunbury ED first with the doctor understanding and evaluating her pain level which was concerning. He immediately took action even though her bloods looked ok. She went for a diagnostic scan which showed concerning results.

My mother was then seen by the surgical team and admitted for surgery late afternoon. She was admitted to the surgical ward late that evening and stayed there for 5 days.

The care and commitment my mother received by all the staff that came in contact with her was amazing and so very much appreciated. English is her second language and the staff made sure they spoke slowly and asked if she understood after an instruction. She has begin stages of dementia and staff was aware of this but didn’t make her feel uncomfortable or like she is being watched all the time.

My mother was not once anxious or scared in a place where she has never been before. The staff was absolutely beautiful and supportive throughout the whole experience. The care that she received was world class and I was proud to be a WACHS healthcare worker.

The doctors and surgeons that treated her was very experienced and knowledgeable, and my mother’s wound looks really good with no post operative complications.

It was unfortunate to see the nurses literally run from one patient to another and see one nurse on 4 patients. This did not stop the nurses or staff to provide the best possible care. My mother was in a mixed gender room which was a bit strange for her but the staff made sure she was comfortable at all times.

Knowing that my mother was South African, the nurses encouraged volunteers that was also South African to visit my mom. This was a beautiful gesture and so very much appreciated by the family.

Once again very well done to the staff from a very busy ward. Thank you for all the love and care for my

Mother. It will never be forgotten. From two vert appreciative daughters.

Dear melonqk77,

Thank you for taking the time to share such thoughtful and heartfelt feedback regarding your mother's recent care at Bunbury Hospital.

I am sorry to hear that your mother became unwell while visiting Bunbury and required emergency surgery. However, I am pleased to hear that she received timely assessment and treatment, beginning with her care in the Emergency Department and continuing throughout her surgical journey and recovery.

Your comments reflect so many aspects of care that our staff strive to provide every day. It is particularly pleasing to hear that staff took the time to communicate patiently and clearly with your mother, ensuring she understood her care despite English being her second language. Equally important is your recognition of the respect, dignity and kindness shown in supporting her with the early stages of dementia, helping her to feel safe, comfortable and reassured throughout her stay.

I was especially touched to read about the efforts made to connect your mother with volunteers from a similar cultural background. Such thoughtful gestures can make a significant difference to a patient's experience and sense of belonging, particularly when they are away from home and family.

Your acknowledgment of the professionalism and expertise of the doctors and surgeons involved in your mother's care is also greatly appreciated. It is wonderful to hear that her surgery was successful and that she continues to recover well without complications.

I also appreciate your recognition of the demands placed on our nursing staff. Despite a busy ward environment, it is clear that the team remained committed to delivering compassionate, high-quality care, and I know they will be encouraged to hear how much their efforts meant to your mother and your family.

Please be assured that I will share your feedback with the Emergency Department, Surgical Ward team, medical officers, surgeons and volunteers involved in your mother's care. Positive feedback such as yours is incredibly meaningful and reinforces the value of the work they do every day.

Thank you again for your kind words and for taking the time to recognise our staff. On behalf of everyone involved in your mother's care, I wish her continued recovery and good health.

Kind regards,

Karen Horsley
Service Co-Director
