"Help for OCD Spiral"

About: Gosford Hospital Gosford Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I had been in the middle of an OCD spiral for two weeks and it didn't seem to be getting better. Based on what my OCD obsession was about my only option was to go to the Gosford Emergency Department. I'd never been to an ED for a (primarily) mental health concern so I was so worried that I would be dismissed and told I was overreacting but not once was I made to feel like I didn't need to be there. I felt listened to the entire time and I could hear the genuine concern in their voices. They knew exactly how to talk to someone with OCD and provided the exact help I needed at the time to overcome the acute spiral. Also, I was asked the best question you could ask in that situation by the Triage Nurse, Matt: "What do you need from us that will help you?". I've never been asked that and it felt like a weight off my shoulders because it gave me the space and confidence to tell them exactly what I was after. I also spoke to an absolutely amazing nurse, Gina, on the phone the next day who was so patient and caring with me (even after my OCD demanded I call back to clarify something...sorry!). I truly felt like everyone I spoke with knew how to help someone in an acute OCD spiral or at the very least truly sympathised with how I was feeling, which is all you need sometimes. I honestly don't think my experience could've been any better and if it hadn't been, I don't think I would've been able to slip out of the spiral as easily.

If the level of care I experienced is what others can expect, I would never be worried about going for a mental health concern again.

Matt (Triage Nurse), Dr Lee and Gina (Infectious Diseases Public Health Nurse) and all the Public Health Drs involved, I truly cannot thank you enough for your patience with me and the care you provided. I genuinely appreciate it ☺️

p.s. apologies if I didn't spell names correctly, I didn't see them written down!
