I recently attended Fiona Stanley Hospital with my 16-year-old daughter, who was acutely unwell with a high fever and suspected infection.
I was initially reluctant to attend due to a previous negative experience at Fiona Stanley, but I was genuinely impressed by the care we received this time.
My daughter was triaged as Category 3 and treated in the paediatric Emergency Department. From the moment we arrived, the staff were professional, attentive and reassuring.
She underwent blood investigations, received IV antibiotics and was reviewed by the surgical team. What impressed me most was the excellent clinical decision-making. Her condition was taken seriously, investigations were thorough, and specialist input was sought appropriately without unnecessary intervention.
The medical students were absolutely delightful, and the ED doctor, despite being extremely busy, remained professional, thorough and attentive throughout. It was clear that the department was under considerable pressure, yet the standard of care never suffered.
We spent approximately six hours in the Emergency Department in total, but I was more than happy to wait. I believe that good medical care takes time, particularly when investigations and specialist consultations are required. Throughout our visit, I felt confident that my daughter was receiving excellent care.
While the adult Emergency Department was experiencing waits of five to six hours just to see a doctor, our experience in paediatrics was exceptional.
It's important to recognise that the individuals working on the ground are doing an incredible job within a very stretched healthcare system.
A huge thank you to the paediatric ED team at Fiona Stanley. Your professionalism, compassion and excellent care were greatly appreciated.
